There’s never been a better time to be a gamer. Technology has advanced to the point where virtually anyone can afford to purchase their own rig. But if you really want to get the most out of your PC gaming sessions, 4K is the way to go. To play games at 4K, you need to make sure you have enough RAM.
8GB of system RAM is enough to run games in 4K, but 16GB will give you better performance. You also need to make sure you have enough GPU RAM. Once again, 8GB of GPU RAM will get the job done, but 16GB is better.
How does RAM impact PC gaming?
RAM is the part of your computer that stores all of the data related to the game you’re playing. It’s what tells the computer that things are working properly. So, RAM is needed to run games without lag.
It used to be difficult to find a PC with enough RAM for gaming. But nowadays almost all prebuilt PCs have 8 to 16 GB of RAM. That’s made it much easier for gamers to find rigs that will play the games they want without issue.
Does RAM speed matter for 4K gaming?
RAM speed is a measure of how fast your computer can process things. It’s measured in Megahertz and commonly displayed as MHz.
You need to have a baseline level of RAM speed to run games in 4K. RAM with a 3,200MHz memory is generally enough for this.
That being said, there’s no need to spend more on RAM speed that’s way above this. The most important factor in 4K gaming is the amount of VRAM (also called GPU RAM) that you have.
Will faster RAM improve FPS?
Extra RAM only offers minimal FPS improvements. But adding some to your PC will free up your CPU to focus on other tasks. This should help to improve the performance of your machine in other ways.
Keep in mind, humans can only see between 30 and 60 frames per second. And most basic gaming PCs are capable of delivering an FPS of 120 or more. So any increases in FPS beyond this will offer minimal benefits.
Is 32GB RAM enough for 4K gaming?
32GB of system RAM is absolutely enough for 4K gaming. You really don’t need more than 16GB. If 4K gaming is your focus, then your money would be better spent on upgrading your rig’s GPU RAM.
The only reason to purchase 32GB of RAM is to future-proof your system. Buying extra system RAM now will ensure that your PC can play new games without needing an upgrade.
Is 128GB RAM overkill?
Almost no one needs 128GB of RAM installed on their computer. So purchasing it for your rig would almost definitely be overkill.
128GB is only worth buying if you plan on running multiple demanding programs at the same time. That only makes sense if you want to run several high-end games at once. Your purchase would only be worth it in that scenario.
Does RAM timing matter for 4K gaming?
RAM timings are another way of measuring how fast your RAM is. They’re a measurement of the latency required to perform various functions. In other words, timings tell you how long you have to wait for the card to process your inputs.
RAM timing isn’t super important for 4K gaming. So don’t worry about investing more to increase it. You’ll get more bang for your buck by focusing on adding more RAM to your machine instead.
What GPU do I need for 4K gaming?
Upgrading your GPU will enable you to get the most out of your 4K gaming sessions. If you plan on purchasing one, you should do so from either Nvidia or AMD. They’re industry leaders who create high-quality GPUs that are ideal for 4K gaming.
Both Nvidia and AMD make several GPUs that will fit your needs. From Nvidia, we recommend the RTX 3070, the RTX 3060 TI, and the RTX 2070. Each is packed with power to ensure you can 4K game without lag.
If you prefer AMD, then check out their Radeon RX 5700 XT. It’s more affordable than Nvidia’s GPUs and still powerful enough to handle the most intensive 4K gaming sessions.
Is 3000 MHz RAM good?
3000 MHz of RAM is good enough. It’s considered the standard for many types of RAM. You will be able to run virtually any game that you want with this much RAM on your PC.
3000 MHz of RAM offers a good blend of performance and affordability. Many of the basic gaming PC setups on the market will offer this level of RAM.
How much does 4K gaming RAM cost?
Since 8GB of RAM is the bare minimum for 4K gaming, let’s look at the costs of that. Prices vary based on the manufacturer and where you buy from. But you can purchase a quality 4K stick of RAM for between $50 and $100.
You might decide to buy 16GB of RAM to ensure better performance. If so, expect to spend between $75 and $150 on the purchase. Once again, prices vary based on what you buy and from whom.
How long does RAM last for gaming?
RAM sticks last a surprisingly long time. This is true even when they’re used for high-end gaming. If you buy new RAM, it should last you between 5 and 10 years.
But you should keep in mind that new games will require increasingly demanding hardware. If you bought the standard amount of RAM today, it might not be enough in 2025 or 2030.
To combat this, many gamers choose to future-proof their rigs. This simply means purchasing more RAM than is needed now to delay the need for an upgrade.
For example, if you buy 8GB of RAM today, you may need to upgrade in 2-3 years to play new games. But if you bought 16GB of RAM today, you likely wouldn’t need an upgrade for 5-10 years or more.
Should I buy a prebuilt PC or make my own for 4K gaming?
The quality of your gameplay won’t be influenced by this decision. You can purchase a prebuilt PC or make your own and still play games in 4K resolution.
But the choice you make will impact your wallet. Making your own gaming PC is often cheaper than buying a prebuilt model. That’s because prebuilt manufacturers often mark up their PCs to turn a profit.
If you’d like to create a PC for 4K gaming, then shop around online for components. See if you can buy all that you need for less than a prebuilt with similar specs. There’s a good chance that you’ll be able to.
However, building your own PC for 4K gaming isn’t always cheaper. Sometimes certain components spike up in price due to increased demand.
For example, top-of-the-line GPUs often cost more when bought individually. This is because crypto miners buy them to increase their mining efficiency, spiking their demand and price.
What if I want to play VR?
VR is becoming more and more popular as the technology improves. Many gamers have bought VR headsets so they can play games at home. Maybe you’d like to do this in addition to gaming at a 4K resolution.
If you want to play VR, don’t worry. The RAM requirements for it aren’t all that intensive. In fact, 8GB of RAM is also enough for the majority of VR games.
Once again, keep in mind that you may need to upgrade sooner if you buy just the bare minimum. Our recommendation is that you purchase 16GB of RAM instead of 8GB so that you don’t have to worry about this.
What else do you need for 4K gaming?
The most important thing you need for 4K gaming is a great GPU card. This is what will allow your computer to output 4K graphics seamlessly without any lag. If you can afford it, a GPU card with 16GB of RAM will work best.
You also need to buy a quality monitor. Not every monitor is capable of displaying 4K graphics. So make sure that you look for a label that tells you the monitor works in 4K before buying.
Is 10GB VRAM enough for 4K?
10GB of VRAM is more than enough for gaming at 4K resolutions. Nvidia says that between 4 and 6 GBs of VRAM are currently needed for 4K gaming with max settings. Buying more than that is probably only necessary if you want to future-proof your PC.
Can a 3080 handle 4K?
Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 is powerful enough for virtually any 4K gaming application. It can run all current-gem games at 4K resolution with maxed-out settings. The GPU can do still while still hitting 80+ frames per second.
Is too much RAM bad for 4K gaming?
No, having too much RAM is never a bad thing. It’s just not necessary to buy any more than 16GB of system RAM for your computer at the moment. So it’s only bad in the sense that you would waste money by purchasing more RAM than this.
