Robots in Education: Pros and Cons

In today’s world, technology is a huge part of our day-to-day life. As technology continues to grow in the classroom and as classrooms have become more and more digital, the question of the pros and cons of artificial intelligence has become a big debate between tech experts and those in the field of education.

We all know that computers are just getting more and more clever and artificial intelligence is now more of a fact of science rather than fiction. The pros of artificial intelligence in education

  • Customize textbooks. Teachers will be able to import syllabus and artificial intelligence and this can be used to create a textbook filled with the most important content and this will also help to customize teaching materials. 
  • Learning will be personalized. A lot of time is spent working out what students learn and a lot of time has also been spent working on the curriculum. That said, artificial intelligence such as robots advance can help and provide teachers with a basic understanding of how students learn, which will enable teachers to customize the curriculum and ensure that it is taught accordingly.
  • Moderation using intelligence. Using intelligent moderation enables teachers and educators to analyze any data that’s been produced by a large group of people using robots and artificial intelligence. This should mean that educators are able to be more efficient in their job roles.
  • Cost quality improves. Artificial intelligence is able to look at patterns where there is a huge group of students who have submitted incorrect answers to the same question. This can then alert a teacher, which then overall, will make teaching more effective.
  • Translation. The translation apps that we have available at the moment are definitely not as accurate as a human translation, however, translation by machines can be more efficient and much faster. By using machine translation, the gap in language that many second language students face can be closed.
  • Effective group formation. When students’ information can be analyzed, robots are able to create groups to suit a particular task to balance weaknesses with strengths.
  • Gamification. This can be used to help to motivate learners as it will make the whole learning experience a much more enjoyable experience.

The cons of artificial intelligence in education

  • Unemployment. If the sector of education becomes more efficient, then there will be less need for educators. If a robot is in charge, class sizes are no longer a factor when it comes to the quality of education, and even with younger students, it may mean that there will be a decrease in teaching assistants and teaching aids too.
  • The cost. When you consider the cost of maintaining, installing, and repairing artificial intelligence such as robots, it’s seen that it would be expensive. Therefore, only those schools that are well funded would be able to benefit from using artificial intelligence in education.
  • A lack of connection. Although technology does improve the experience of education overall, it cannot be seen as a substitute for real human interaction. If we end up relying on technology to mark or grade a student’s work, we could end up in a situation where things are missed and this will affect students in a negative sense, more than the overall positive experience we hope to gain from using robots in the classroom.
  •  An addiction. A risk we run with using technology in our everyday day-to-day lives and in education, for instance, is that we could become addicted to it.
  • Decision-making. Computers are getting cleverer all the time, and we can see that not only do they have the ability to learn, but they can also teach other computers. However, it’s still in debate whether a computer is able to make decisions in a situation where intuition is required and this can often be experienced in an educational setting such as a classroom.
  • Loss of information. It goes without saying that technology usually breaks down one day and in the instance of artificial intelligence, the same applies and something will need repairing at some point. The side effect of this is the information that can be lost or the amount of information that can be lost as a result of a repair.

Overall, it’s clear to see that there are more benefits of using artificial intelligence and robots in education. However, it’s clear to see that in order to use robots and artificial intelligence properly, a balance needs to be created between the tasks that are optimized and the people using the machines. Artificial intelligence in education isn’t to replace teachers and educators,  it should be used as something to make their jobs easier.
