Twitter Log Out Issues (Causes & Fixes)

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been experiencing a strange issue with my Twitter account. Each time I try to view my feed or close and open the app or website, I find myself getting logged out.

I wouldn’t do this on my own since I loathe logging in to social media accounts. It’s easier when everything is saved and logs me in automatically. So naturally, when I kept getting logged out, I had to dig into why this was happening.

The most common reason that Twitter keeps logging you out is that you have disabled cookies on your browser if you are having an issue on the web. If it’s an issue with your iOS, it’s most likely due to a bug that keeps popping up. This is an issue with the Twitter app that only they can fix.

I’ve spent a lot of time researching this issue and testing troubleshooting methods. If you keep having the issue where Twitter constantly logs you out of your account, keep reading for helpful tips on how to fix it.

Why Does Twitter Keep Logging Me Out?

The most likely reason Twitter keeps logging you out if you’re using a web browser is that you have disabled cookies in your settings.

Cookies are something on your computer that stores relevant data, including your personal preferences and login information. Even if you told Twitter to remember your login information, your browser won’t store it if cookies aren’t enabled.

If you’re having problems with the app, it could be due to a bug or a compromised account. If this is the case, the bug can’t be fixed by you. You have to wait until Twitter solves the issue. If your app was compromised, change your password immediately

Browser Settings

Changing your browser settings is relatively easy. All you have to do is access the settings within the browser you’re using. Here’s how to change your cookie settings within different browsers:

  3. Choose View advanced settings

  4. Go to Cookies and website data
  5. Select Always allow
  6. Click on Close and refresh the browser

App Problems

An additional reason that you’re getting logged out may be that you haven’t given the app all the permissions it has asked for. Sometimes users will also have to enter a PIN in addition to the login process. Anytime you clear data for an app such as Twitter, you’ll be asked to log into your account again.

However, if the issue persists even though you’ve given the app all permissions and haven’t cleared any data, it may be an issue with a compromised account. I recommend you change your password immediately because somebody else may have access to your account information.

Lastly, it could be a bug within the app. In 2021, Twitter faced issues with a bug that constantly logged users out of their accounts on iOS 15. The bug was affecting every account the user had and logging people out repeatedly.

From what I gather, the bug has been fixed, but sometimes they can re-appear out of nowhere. This isn’t fixable on your end. It’s something that has to be fixed by Twitter programmers.

Reset Password

If you think your account has been compromised, then you’ll need to reset your password. When you reset your password on just one of your devices, you’ll automatically be logged out of all other devices that may be linked to your account. You will then have to re-enter your credentials using the password you just created.

Additionally, when you reset your password and attempt to log in again, you may face an issue where your web browser tries to use your old saved account information. If this is the case, you’ll need to clear your browser’s cache. This will delete any existing data from your browser.

If you’re using Chrome, here’s how you can clear your browser’s cache:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the three-dot icon on the top-right corner of the page
  3. Click on More Tools
  4. Click on Clear browsing data or you can click Ctrl + Shift + Del to quickly clear browsing data

For Firefox:

  1. Click on Menu
  2. Choose Firefox
  3. Select Preferences
  4. Click on Privacy & Security
  5. Select Cookies and Site Data
  6. Click Clear Data
  7. Choose Clear

For Internet Explorer:

  1. Select Tools
  2. Click on Safety
  3. Select Delete browsing history
  4. Choose the data or files you want to remove
  5. Select Delete

For Safari on Mac

  1. Click on History
  2. Choose Clear History
  3. Click on the pop-up menu
  4. Choose how far back you want to erase

Account Security

Sometimes Twitter may reset your account if they suspect it’s been compromised or if they consider them to be fraudulent. When they reset your account, you’ll be logged out of all devices.

Some users may be sent an email regarding what they did and they’ll explain what you need to do to get back into your account. They’ll be provided with a reset link that can be used to reset their password.

Furthermore, if Twitter suspects your account has been hacked or seems suspicious due to activities against their policy, then you may be temporarily logged out of your account. You can log back in once you reset your password after waiting for a certain amount of time.

These are actions that Twitter takes to ensure your account is secure on all devices.

Troubleshooting Twitter

Update The Twitter App

Whether it be Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, or any other app you have on your phone, they need to occasionally be updated to fix bugs and improve overall performance.

Updating Twitter will help keep it running smoothly and will give you access to any features they’ve added. When they do these updates, especially on iOS, it may log you out of your account, which is completely normal.

To update your Twitter app, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your respective app store
  2. Search for Twitter
  3. If there’s an update, it will say “Update” whereas it usually says install or purchase
  4. Proceed to update and restart the app

Check If Twitter Servers Are Down

If you’re having an issue logging into Twitter after you’ve been logged out or you’re facing other issues such as the feed not loading, you should check if the servers are down. You can do this by going to Downdetector.com.

This will tell you if the Twitter servers are down and when they’re expected to be back up if they put out any updates. On this website, you can also leave a comment regarding your experience and you can view comments that other people with the same issues are having.

Reinstall Twitter To Fix The Logging Out Issue

Sometimes the Twitter app can cause certain annoying issues such as logging out constantly. If you’ve updated the app, closed and re-opened it, and changed your password but still have an issue, consider completely reinstalling the app.

When an app is deleted, it deletes all data that had been stored. This can sometimes fix bugs that may be lingering within the data.

Deleting an app is different on each device, so here’s how to do it on the most common ones:

Apple

  1. Touch and hold the Twitter app
  2. Tap on Delete App
  3. Tap on Delete
  4. Go back into the app store and find Twitter
  5. Click on “Get” or “Purchase”
  6. Wait for it to install and log back in

Android

  1. Tap and hold the Twitter app
  2. Click on Uninstall or Delete
  3. Once completed, go back to the Google Play Store and locate Twitter
  4. Click on Install
  5. Once installed, log back into Twitter

Enable Background App Refresh for Twitter

Background app refresh allows apps to perform background functions that you would otherwise have to keep the app open for it to access.

It preloads the latest tweets so you don’t have to wait for them when you open the app. Enabling this will use a lot of battery life and data, so it’s definitely not for everybody.

If you want to enable background app refresh, here’s what to do:

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click on General
  3. Scroll down to Background App Refresh
  4. Make sure the slider is active for Twitter

Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Click on Connections
  3. Select Data Usage
  4. Go to Mobile and click Mobile data usage
  5. Select Twitter
  6. Turn on Allow background data usage

Remove Suspicious Third-Party Services From Your Twitter Account

In most cases, Twitter allows you to link third-party services to your account. Some of these third-party services have malicious intentions, such as hacking into your Twitter and gathering your personal information.

Twitter is locked down enough to avoid serious potential damage, but as soon as you give the suspicious third-party app permission to view your Twitter, it can cause irreparable damage. You should never download a third-party app you don’t trust. If you’ve already done so, here’s how to remove them from a desktop browser:

  1. Open Twitters Settings
  2. Click on Security
  3. Choose Apps
  4. Select the app(s) you want to remove
  5. Repeat as needed

Don’t Use A VPN For Twitter

Some Twitter users may choose to use a VPN for their tweeting, but this isn’t always a good thing to do. Some may do it if they’re traveling and tweeting at the same time to avoid censorship.

However, if Twitter finds out you’re doing this, you could be banned for a short time or life. Fortunately, they don’t track IP addresses directly, so you’ll be able to sign back up with a different email or phone number.

Conclusion

If you can’t solve the issue of being logged out of Twitter constantly, you may have to contact Twitter directly. You can email them or contact them by phone at 1-415-222-9958. It can be hard to determine whether or not your account is the only one being logged out of constantly.

If you can get into Twitter, check their page to see if anybody else is having the same problem. If not, I hope the troubleshooting steps above help you solve the problem quickly so you can get back to Tweeting.
